The EOSDA team is excited to announce its participation in the VONA: Inside Ecocide hackathon. Our Soil Scientist, Dr. Vasyl Cherlinka, will be an online mentor for companies and teams that wish to join the movement to combat ecocide in war zones. The hackathon will take place starting May 15th, 2024, and lasting a couple of weeks in Cannes, Kyiv, and Tallinn, as well as online.
The hackathon will coincide with the screening of VONA: Inside Ecocide docuseries about the environmental destruction in Ukraine due to war. The series will be presented during the 77th Cannes Film Festival Marché du Film, and the hackathon is a great way to attract the world’s attention to the catastrophe unfolding in Ukraine. The event provides activists with an excellent opportunity to collaborate and connect with like-minded geniuses who support the great cause.
The teams from the cinema, technology, science, politics, and NGO sectors will collaborate to create solutions in four domains — water, radiation, air, and soil — with the help of notable experts. In the soil domain, Dr. Vasyl Cherlinka will become a consultant to help the teams achieve their goals.
During my research, I concluded that severe soil change, including instances of catastrophic degradation, occurs in numerous regions impacted by war. This renders the disturbed soils unsuitable for agricultural or other endeavors. The war destroys the heart of all terrestrial ecosystems—soils, which is why I feel a strong responsibility to participate in this hackathon.
We are pleased that EOSDA and Dr. Cherlinka agreed to participate in this hackathon. Soil science plays a pivotal role in restoring Ukraine after the war, as agriculture feeds so many worldwide. We see a big potential in our participants, and Dr. Cherlinka will help them reach it.
