Kateryna Sergieieva At The NASA Space Apps Challenge

The EOSDA team was excited to participate in the NASA Space Apps Challenge Dnipro 2024. Our data scientist, Kateryna Sergieieva, was an online mentor for teams needing help with Earth remote sensing from space, ecological and social processes modeling, and project management. The hackathon took place for two days, October 5th and 6th, 2024, all around the world and online.

The NASA Space Apps Challenge is the largest space hackathon, and NGO Noosphere has been hosting it in Ukraine for the past 8 years. This year, the participation skyrocketed again, with 247 participants uniting in 58 teams and creating 48 projects.

The NASA Space Apps Challenge is an event that has several important objectives, namely: it informs young people about the trends in the development of space technologies, contributes to the improvement of awareness, practical training, leadership qualities, and communication skills, provides the opportunity for self-realization and implementation of ideas.

Kateryna spent several hours with the teams on October 5th at the Noosphere School of Engineering. At that time, most of the participants already had a vision of the goals and the project concept. Some of them were even at the final stages of implementation. She was impressed by the comprehensive knowledge of schoolchildren and students in space topics, their fluency in questions related to NASA’s research areas, and their technical training. Many of the participants had in-depth knowledge of software development and computer modeling.

She also noted the participants’ energy, creativity, and unexpected project ideas. They took non-standard approaches even to solving typical tasks. The main focus of the projects was their practical significance and scientific basis based on NASA technologies and data. Topics related to the popularization of science among children through play and the study of exoplanets aroused the most significant interest among the participants.

On Monday, October 7th, Kateryna was also present at the projects’ defense. The teams’ speakers confidently presented their work and provided detailed answers to the experts’ questions.

Overall, I consider the NASA Space Challenge an exciting event that provides talented young people an excellent opportunity to discover themselves and join the global scientific community.

EOSDA was thrilled to help our generation’s young geniuses create space-based solutions for a brighter future. We thank NGO Noosphere for this opportunity and Kateryna Sergieieva for being a top-tier specialist ready to encourage and support young scientists.
