This pioneering Mexican agro-biotechnology enterprise tackles agriculture’s most persistent challenges through in-depth research and cutting-edge technology, developing solutions that make crop production both more profitable and sustainable. To learn about Agribest’s unique approach, Sebastian Soto, Sales Executive Brazil & Iberoamerica at EOS Data Analytics, spoke with Manelick Alejandro Malagón Martínez, Coordinator of the Agricultural Monitoring Center at Agribest Technologies. Their conversation sheds light on how Agribest drives sustainable growth in Mexico’s agricultural sector with smart technology partnerships.
Let Us Start With Agribest And EOSDA’s Partnership. How Did It Begin And Evolve Over Time?
Our journey with EOSDA began in 2022 when we started monitoring 5,000 hectares using the EOSDA Crop Monitoring platform. Earlier, we struggled with the discrepancy between laboratory results and the field performance of our products. Factors like variable moisture levels, ground elevation, and historical weather data made it hard to predict product behavior in real-world conditions. Satellite-based crop monitoring finally gave us the comprehensive, timely data we needed to close this gap. The impressive results from that pilot phase quickly convinced us to scale up. By 2024, we had expanded our monitored area to 60,000 hectares — a testament to the platform’s effectiveness and the strong partnership we’ve built.
One of the key factors behind this growth was our commitment to deeply understanding Mexico’s diverse agricultural landscape, from the arid north to the wetter southeast. We spent over 10,000 hours adapting the platform to different farming methods — whether organic, conservation-focused, or traditional — and aligning it with our value proposition. This hands-on, region-specific approach allowed us to tailor EOSDA’s technology to local needs, ensuring its relevance and impact.
EOSDA’s tools have become essential not just for monitoring but for driving innovation, development, and research at Agribest. The data we gain on crop health, fieldwork, and costs provides critical support to both our commercial teams and our broader strategic initiatives. By comparing estimated and actual costs in real time, we can control budgets more effectively and improve our ROI.
Moreover, EOSDA plays a vital role in what we call our “cross strategy” — combining profitability with sustainability through digitization. In Mexico, digital tools in agriculture are still gaining traction, unlike in European countries like Spain, where they’re already standard practice. With EOSDA’s support, we’re helping lead the digital transformation of Mexican agriculture, making sustainable and profitable farming more accessible and achievable.
As we continue to grow, it’s crucial that our specific use cases and evolving needs remain a focus. We’ve implemented the platform in ways that perhaps weren’t envisioned initially, but this flexibility has been key to its success. Together with EOSDA, we’re building a model for smarter, data-driven agriculture in Mexico.
Where Are You Now In The Mexican Agtech Market?
Latin America’s agricultural sector is at a turning point, combining vast, untapped agricultural land with a strong demand for tech-driven innovation. Agtech startups across the region are developing farmer-first solutions, reshaping traditional practices and boosting productivity.
Mexico stands out in this landscape as a top crop exporter and a key hub for agricultural innovation. U.S. direct investment in Mexico’s agriculture industries amounted to approximately $3.5 billion in 2023 alone, further supporting the sector’s development and digitalization efforts . With rising investor interest and government support, Mexico is fast becoming one of the most attractive markets for agtech investments and technological growth.
Agribest is currently one of the top 10 companies driving technological innovation in Mexico’s agricultural sector. Our reputation extends beyond national borders, thanks to the social impact we create by promoting more profitable and sustainable farming practices. Collaborations and partnerships, like the one we have with EOSDA, have been essential in helping us reach this position, providing the digital support we need to create and execute innovative approaches.
We’ve been expanding and strengthening our position in the Mexican agtech market steadily. We’re aiming to reach annual growth rate of at least 20%. While we strive for 30% growth, external factors like agricultural policies and climatic challenges sometimes affect this goal. Despite these challenges, our commitment to innovation and strategic development keeps us on a strong upward trajectory.
In Your Experience, Have There Been Any Challenges Related To The Use Or Promotion Of EOSDA’s Solutions To Mexican Farmers?
We’ve come across a few minor challenges, like organizing fields in the mobile app. Additionally, with new customers, there’s been a learning curve to adapt to the digital solution and the process of switching between devices to fully benefit from it. However, these issues have been manageable and do not overshadow the advantages of EOSDA Crop Monitoring.
We try to align with our cross strategy in promoting EOSDA’s services to Mexican farmers. Our goal is to integrate EOSDA Crop Monitoring with other services we offer to our partners, farmers, agri-related companies, and even governments. By doing so, we present EOSDA’s solution as a key part of Agribest’s broader monitoring service, iCrop, where the near real-time data provided by EOSDA plays a central role in helping Mexican farmers achieve profitability and sustainability.
Do You Have Any Advice On How Similar Companies Can Be As Successful As You Are?
Our advice for similar companies aiming for success would first be to understand how technology can help improve efficiency and ensure proper tracking of activities. In Mexico, agriculture is primarily focused on the domestic market, and there’s limited export activity, which slows digitalization. However, those who embrace innovation and stay ahead of evolving regulations are usually the ones who succeed. While Mexico doesn’t yet have the same strict regulations as Europe, where field logbooks have become a must-have, the trend toward digitalization is clear. Starting now will make companies more adaptable in the future.
Additionally, companies should be conscious of their environmental and social responsibility. The health of the environment and human well-being are directly linked to agricultural practices, so we must strive to be mindful of this relationship.
The biggest hurdle companies face when adopting technology is overcoming resistance to change. There is often a perception that it’s not the right time, or that traditional farming practices should remain in place. However, once you embrace technology, it opens up new ways of gathering information and making decisions.
Satellite-based data is already a remarkable leap in agricultural technology, offering invaluable insights through processed multispectral images. But we’re anticipating the next breakthrough: a technology, like specialized glasses, that could deliver real-time field data similar to what satellites provide—without the processing delays. The ability to access this kind of information instantly could be revolutionary and completely transform how we monitor and manage our fields.
Today, everything is interconnected, and having a strong understanding of fields like geography, biostatistics, Big Data, and AI is essential for leveraging these technologies effectively in agriculture and beyond. With my background in agronomy, I truly value this multidisciplinary knowledge. However, it’s concerning that many agriculture specialists today have limited exposure to these essential fields. If universities in Latin America begin incorporating these subjects more, technology adoption will be smoother and more widespread.
We’ve been fortunate to have exceptional support from EOSDA when implementing space-based technologies in our day-to-day operations. The team’s responsiveness and willingness to help, regardless of time zones, including translating the platform into Spanish and adding crops specific to our region, have been invaluable in helping us integrate technology smoothly.
